Conductor Bio:  HaZamir Chicago Conductor and Cantorial Soloist Shawna Rosen has been involved in the Jewish music world since childhood, growing up and singing in the choir at Congregation Solel in Highland Park, Illinois.  After receiving her masters degree in music education and choral conducting from the University of Illinois, Shawna soon became Solel’s choir director and b’nai mitzvah tutor in 1996, where she remained until 2004.  She went on to conduct the choirs and tutor at Beth Emet in Evanston, Temple Beth El in Northbrook, and BJBE in Deerfield, Illinois. Along the way, Shawna would occasionally substitute for the Cantors at those synagogues, and she fell in love with new ways of helping people connect to and engage with Judaism through music.  Now beginning her second year as Cantorial Soloist at Temple Judea Mizpah in Skokie, IL, Shawna’s responsibilities include planning and co-leading worship with Rabbi Amy Memis-Foler, coordinating their b’nai mitzvah program, and conducting the adult choir.  Shawna also is a public school elementary music teacher in Northfield, IL,  where she has been for 13 years. Shawna is thrilled to help grow HaZamir in Chicago and looks forward to helping area teens connect with Judaism and Israel through music.  Shawna is a proud member of the Guild of Temple Musicians, the Women Cantors’ Network, The American Choral Directors' Association and the National Association for Music Education. She and her husband Ira live in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, with their five children.
